What Happens Behind the Scenes, That You May Not See on Social Media
Highlighting the ins and outs that go into a renovation.
One of the greatest parts of being a creative is unveiling the final masterpiece and getting to share it with everyone. When it comes to an interior design project, there are various processes to ensure a space is functional just as much as it is beautiful. Social media and online portfolios are great places to marvel at all the splendid glory of interior design projects but there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes. As an interior designer myself, I’m here to walk you through 5 major steps that go into a renovation.
1. Initial Consultation: Let’s Get Down to Business
The initial consultation call includes what the client’s needs are. Will the renovation be residential or commercial? Is it a certain area or a full renovation? Similar to the dating process, the client and designer need to take this time to find if they are compatible with one another and if the project is achievable within the specified budget and time allowed. A couple of meetings will probably take place inside the space for the client to clearly communicate the project to the designer. Once a few more calls are made to outline the details of the renovation, more specifics on budget, and firmer timelines are agreed upon, then the planning can begin!
2. Working In The Studio
My heart and joy lie in the actual creative process. Each design project is uniquely crafted with intention to reflect the client’s needs and individuality. This is where the real magic happens behind the scenes. This creative process includes everything from space planning, selecting fabrics and materials, to identifying the right style and direction. Creating mood boards are an exciting way to help me convey the beginnings of a room design. There are also various computer programs that aid in facilitating a preview of the final design within the creative process such as AutoCAD to create floorplans and mockups and photoshop to enhance or modify elevation renderings. With consistent communication between us and the client, these sketches and renderings, floor plans, and other details are presented and modified to give a clear and final depiction of the client’s vision. Once these plans and specifications have been approved, we proceed with our next steps.
3. All Hands On Deck
One of the responsibilities of an interior designer when working on a renovation is to hire a contractor to help execute the project. The roles between an interior designer and a contractor differ in that a designer primarily handles the overall vision, while the contractor focuses on the execution. Some of the tasks a contractor will handle include putting together design specifications, providing construction services, and ensuring every installation's functionality. If the designer has its own firm, there may be a team of junior designers and other members to help facilitate the project as it progresses. Both the visionary and execution teams work hand in hand to make sure the client's dream comes to life.
For larger scale projects, there may be a whole team of designers, contractors, and even architects in the mix. For most renovations, selecting an interior designer is the first and most crucial step. The designer will bring a network of professionals with them so you can be confident that you have the right team there for you when you need them.
4. Good Things Come to Those Who Wait
Although I would love for a renovation to happen at the snap of my fingers, quality comes at the cost of time. Waiting for deliveries to arrive can sometimes be a hassle – especially with COVID-19 induced shipping delays. There are so many essential parts that need to be pieced together. Everything from building materials, to furniture pieces, and décor all must come together seamlessly to create a cohesive and polished look. The final stages of the installation process can be very exciting, and this is usually when the rest of the world gets to see previews of ongoing projects on social media. We love showcasing the beaming light at the end of the tunnel. It is also rewarding having others along for the ride to see how far the space has come between its before and after shots.
5. The Final Reveal
After weeks or even several months of working on a project, all the hard work finally pays off when we get to see the client’s reaction to their new interiors.
