VF Interiors: A Snapshot in Time

Hello from VF Interiors in May 2020. I am documenting this moment in time— and creating a snapshot, if you will— for my VF Interiors community to peruse and for future me to look back on.

As you know, this year has taken an unexpected turn that was hardly imaginable a few months ago. COVID-19 has shaken the global community in unimaginable ways. There has been tragedy and uncertainty that goes without saying; however, there has also been an awakening simmering in this storm.

As a community, there is a newfound appreciation for front-line workers. It has always been there, but we can’t help but voice it aloud right now. Staying home has given us all a time to pause. Our needs and values have shifted. Our homes have become classrooms, board rooms and everything in between. We yearn for togetherness. We yearn for comfort.

As I am sure rings true for many interior designers, my schedule has been a tad different than what was initially planned for this year. While these last few months were supposed to include a photoshoot, new design project meetings, days at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart and personal travel, my time has consisted of facemasks, new recipes, Zoom happy hours and pulling together inspiration in my newly finished office.

This moment in time will be remembered for its unbelievable path around the globe. But for me, and VF Interiors as a whole, this is what will be fondly recollected in the years to come:

1. I am appreciating Chicago more in this new light and getting back to nature.

This time spent at home has allowed me to fully appreciate Chicago in this moment and bring me back to nature with the beautiful views of Lake Michigan. I take time to get outside for a socially-distanced walk and have appreciated the beauty of being outdoors.

2. A community connection has emerged, and it is remarkably moving.

There is a strong sense of community connection like never before-- every evening at 8pm there is a community sing-along with a local radio station. I try to walk Rufus at this time or go out on my balcony to participate. We are better together.

3. Conversations and moments with family and friends are cherished now more than ever.

I’ve been able to connect and spend more time speaking with my family and friends. There have been a few virtual "happy hour" dates in my calendar.

4. My business has taken time to look inward in order to look ahead.

VF Interiors is founded on individuality, professionalism and innovation. I started this company with a passion for creativity and design, and I want to make sure that is communicated in all aspects of my business. We’ve relaunched my website to better highlight my interior design imagery from recent projects. We’ve also relaunched my blog and have been connecting with the interior design and Chicago community on social media.

5. Networking and business development opportunities continue to connect us thanks to the efforts of our interior design community.

Thanks to many virtual seminars, podcasts and conferences, I’ve enjoyed having a continued connection with the design community and listening to fellow industry professionals on relevant topics for design today. LuAnn Nigara and Mydoma Studio’s 19 Hours Schedule are among my top choices. I’ve also stayed connected with our IDS Chicago Chapter, which is always near and dear to my heart.

6. I am grateful for home.

I have been able to fully appreciate my newly renovated home, and I am so glad it was nearly completed before SIP began! I have been able to use my new kitchen while testing out new baking recipes and enjoy the tranquility of my new master bathroom. (There have been many face-masks and baths during this time.) As I connect with clients, I know this is a common thread. Our homes truly are our sanctuary, and I could not be prouder for the work that I do.

As you can see, there is a light in the darkness and an undeniable change emerging from the discomforts of what used to be. I look forward to the days of sitting side by side with my clients to translate their greatest passions and plans into a unique design. Until then, a call or FaceTime will do. I hope you and your loved ones are safe during this time. My heart goes out to all those affected in the Chicago community and around the world.
